Worldwide, new cases of mental disorders among individuals aged 5 to 24 increased by 11% annually during the pandemic
Young adults aged 15 to 24 were most affected, with the biggest increases in both anxiety and depression occurring in this group. Children under 10 also saw notable increases in anxiety.

Mental disorders including anxiety and depression exploded among children and teenagers during the pandemic, according to a new large-scale study.
The study, published in the journal Psychological Medicine, found that worldwide new cases of mental disorders among individuals aged 5 to 24 increased by 11% annually during the pandemic.
Although previous research had focused on changes in the global burden of mental health disorders during the pandemic, there were few large-scale studies focused on the children and teenagers in particular.
The researchers used data from 204 countries and territories worldwide, focusing on individuals aged 5 to 24. They examined three key metrics: the number of new cases, the total number of people affected, and the burden of mental disorders in terms of years lived with disability (YLDs). They compared data from 2019, before the pandemic, to data from 2020 and 2021, at the height of the pandemic.
The results showed a sharp increase in mental disorders among children and teenagers during the pandemic. In 2021, there were around 123 million new cases of mental disorders in this age group. The overall rate of new cases increased by 11.8% per year during the pandemic, a significant rise by comparison with pre-pandemic trends.
Anxiety disorders were subject to the most dramatic increase, becoming the leading cause of non-fatal disability among people aged 5 to 24, with 12.9 million years lived with disability recorded in 2021. Depressive disorders also saw a large rise, becoming the fourth leading cause of disability.

The study revealed disparities based on sex and age. Females experienced a greater rise in mental disorders than males, especially depression. Young adults aged 15 to 24 were most affected, with the biggest increases in both anxiety and depression occurring in this group. Children under 10 also saw notable increases in anxiety.
Geographically, the increases were most pronounced in the wealthiest countries. The West, especially North America, Western Europe, and Australasia, saw the largest increases in anxiety and depression rates. Some regions in Latin America also experienced large increases.
