Trump will “clear out the bad guys” in the Justice Department and investigate fraud in the 2020 election, sources told The Washington Post
President-elect Donald Trump intends to fire special counsel Jack Smith and his entire team of prosecutors, and begin a full investigation into the 2020 election result, reports The Washington Post.
“President-elect Donald Trump plans to fire the entire team that worked with special counsel Jack Smith to pursue two federal prosecutions against the former president, including career attorneys typically protected from political retribution,” The Post reported.
“Trump is also planning to assemble investigative teams within the Justice Department to hunt for evidence in battleground states that fraud tainted the 2020 election.”
In a statement, Trump’s new press secretary Karoline Leavitt said that “one of the many reasons that President Trump won the election in a landslide is Americans are sick and tired of seeing their tax dollars spent on targeting the Biden-Harris Administration’s political enemies rather than going after real violent criminals in our streets.”
A source “familiar with the plans” told the Post that Trump is looking to “clean out the bad guys”, and noted that reforming the Justice Department was a more important priority for the incoming president than investigating election fraud in 2020 in battleground states.
Trump has vowed to reinstate his “Schedule F” executive order, which he passed before he left office in 2021. The order would have reclassified large numbers of career employees in the federal government and made it much easier to fire them. The order was reversed by Joe Biden when he took office. The President also put in place new protections for career employees.
Experts say it could take years for mass firings to be implemented, because of legal challenges.
Although the plan to investigate the 2020 election is less of a priority, according to sources, it’s clear that Trump still believes the election was stolen.
In September, Trump said there was “rampant cheating” in 2020 and said that that those responsible would “be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law, which will include long-term prison sentences.”
“Please beware,” the president-elect wrote on Truth Social, “that this legal exposure extends to Lawyers, Political Operatives, Donors, Illegal Voters, & Corrupt Election Officials. Those involved in unscrupulous behavior will be sought out, caught, and prosecuted at levels, unfortunately, never seen before in our Country.”
Trump’s efforts will be bolstered by the appointment of loyalists to in the Justice Department. After the resignation of his first appointment to lead the Justice Department, Matt Gaetz, Trump nominated Pam Bondi, a former Florida attorney general who worked in the first Trump administration.
